CAYMAN ISLANDS
Christopher Columbus discovered the islands in 1503 after winds blew him off his course from Panama to Hispaniola. He called the islands Las Tortugas (“The Turtles” in Spanish) due to the large numbers of turtles on the islands. Around 1540 the islands gained the name Caymanas, from a Carib word for marine alligators or “caiman”, an animal found on the islands.
The Flag of the Cayman Islands was adopted in 1959. Prior to that, the Islands had used the British flag for all official occasions.
The flag is a Blue Ensign with the Union Flag in the canton, defaced with the Islands’ coat of arms. A red ensign of this design is the civil ensign.

This week is Anti-Bullying Week, so we’re sharing our top five tips for parents of children with autism who are worried about bullying in school.
Our research suggests that over 40% of children with autism and almost 60% of children with Asperger syndrome have been bullied at school. Recent research from the University of Manchester has also found that children with autism are two to three times more likely to be bullied than other children.
It’s vital that your child’s school has a zero-tolerance bullying policy. It is their duty to encourage pupils to report bullying and investigate reports. Here are some strategies that you and your child’s school can put in place to help overcome bullying:
1. Help your child to tell someone
Telling someone that you’re being bullied is tough, but for a young person with autism it can be particularly difficult to express emotions and anxieties. Some may not even recognise that they are being bullied. It is important that your child knows they can talk to someone; if your child can’t communicate verbally about bullying, ask them to write it down or draw you a picture to explain what happens at school. You can also ask if your child’s school has a bully box – this lets your child write or draw their experience of bullying and place it in a box, so they don’t have to talk to an adult face-to-face.
2. Buddy up
Young people with autism can struggle to make friends. Many find it hard talk to someone they don’t know and may not always understand what they should say. Buddying schemes at school can be a great way for children with autism to learn how to develop friendships. Ask if your child’s school has a buddying scheme and, if they don’t, see if they will set one up. Your school can ask another pupil to stay with your child during breaks. Some schools also have a buddy bench where pupils can sit to show that they need someone to play with or talk to.
3. Make a plan for break time
Young people with autism may struggle with the lack of structured activity at break times and can become anxious because they don’t know what to expect. Ask the school what structured activities your child could take part in during break time and whether they have a quiet space or ‘safe space’, such as a library or classroom, where your child can go if they need to get away. You or your child’s teacher could also sit down with your child to write a Social Story for break times. A Social Story is a description of a particular situation, such as lunchtime at school, which explains what to do or expect.
4. Practice talking to bullies and understanding emotions
Young people with autism may struggle more than others to know how to react to conversations, comments and bullying. Try talking to your child to help them understand body language and eye contact – both their own and that of the bully. You can also practise with your child how to respond to bullies and what they could say in different situations. A child with autism may also find it difficult to recognise emotions like fear, so it might help to spend some time teaching your child more about different feelings and what to do when they experience them.
5. Get in touch with us and your child’s school
As the leading charity for people affected by autism, we provide confidential advice for parents worried about bullying. Call our Autism Helpline on 0808 800 4104 for advice on coping with bullying and approaching your child’s school to address the problem and put the right strategies in place. Cicero said that “gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.†The English preacher John Henry Jowett wrote that “every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road.†And according to Aseop Fables, “gratitude is the sign of noble souls.†A dear professor of mine just acknowledged a thank-you note I sent him and told me that “gratitude is the sign of maturity and wisdom.â€
I don’t feel like I’m very good at gratitude. This virtue comes hard to a depressive whose first thoughts are seldom positive. It has only been with much work and lots of practice that I have been able to cultivate gratitude and be genuinely thankful. Here are 12 techniques I use to help me get to the parent of all virtues.

Cameron visits Trinity College Cambridge to assess his maths ability
Cameron Thompson is a 14-year-old maths prodigy from north Wales. He passed with high grades at maths GCSE and A-level and is now taking an Open University degree in pure maths. So what does it feel like to be a teenager growing up with raging hormones and a towering intellect?
At the age of 11, Cameron sat a school entrance maths test.
“One hundred and forty one out of 140, I broke the system, I think I did well,” he says.
At the same age, he sailed through two GCSEs in maths and additional maths, and in the same year passed his maths A-level with flying colours. But being brilliant at maths has become Cameron’s entire identity, and trying to fit in at school and develop his social skills has somehow become left behind in a desire to escape mediocrity.
“I have the social ability of a talking potato,” he says.
“Most people my age do despise me. I’ve been like this for years. I’m used to being ignored.”
The foundations of his academic success have also been shaken by the fact that his grades for his degree course have been dropping, and he is panicking. In the first year, his marks were up in the 80s, putting him in the top 0.5%. But on a recent assignment, he scored 72%, a healthy grade by most people’s standards, but not enough to secure the distinction that he wants.
“I am a bit worried about failing the Open University,” he says. “I just am, despite the fact that, technically, I shouldn’t be doing it for about another five years.”
Fresh start
Although Cameron can easily identify the answers, he has trouble explaining how he came to his conclusion, bringing down his overall marks, and he will only be able to continue with the degree if his marks show signs of improvement.
His parents, Rod and Alison, who live near Wrexham, are unsure whether his struggle to explain is due to his age, or the fact he has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a type of autism that can occasionally combine great mental prowess with communication problems.
“Apparently plenty of people with Asperger’s are really intelligent, high achievers,” Cameron says. “People like Einstein and Newton, they had supposed Asperger’s.”
The pressure of making sure his marks improve on his next assignment is a worry for Cameron.
It is not his parents that drive this ambition to achieve, but Cameron himself, and to add to this stress he is also growing up.
“Mum first noticed a moustache, she saw it and told me about it,” he explains. Not long after that, one of his younger sisters, 10-year-old Beth, accidentally ripped it off with a piece of sticky tape.
With his family moving house, however, Cameron is facing a fresh start at a new school and the opportunity to try to establish a new social life.
“It gives me a chance to start again, so they reckon [I’ll] actually work my way up the social ladder, instead of just staying at the bottom,” he says.
“If I can make it to the middle I’m less likely to be bullied there, certainly not physically.”
One characteristic of Asperger’s is a difficulty to make friends, and Alison worries that her son does not always listen to social cues.
“Sometimes tact goes right over his head. Naive would be the best word for it,” she says.
“He is a brilliant kid. He couldn’t do enough for everybody. At the same time, while sometimes he is oblivious, he is also very sensitive,” she says.

Budding Duncanrig DJ gets a helping hand from Radio 2. Report by James McSherry
By Kayleigh Mcleod
Second year student Rory Macfadyen got a pleasant surprise when the sound department at Radio 2 provided him with his own professionally produced radio jingle.
Rory, who attends the communication support base at Duncanrig Secondary School in East Kilbride, has been using the school’s radio station to write and present his own show as a means of improving his communication skills.
The team responsible for the Chris Evan’s Breakfast Show created the jingle with the budding DJ in mind.
Teacher Catherine Holmes said: “Rory is a great fan of Radio 2 and, in particular, of The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.
“He has based his own show on The Chris Evans show, calling it ‘The Rory Macfadyen Breakfast Show’.
We contacted the show and sound producer Chris Reay offered not only to send us some of the jingles they use on the show, but to make Rory his own customised jingle based on one of Chris Evans’. Rory is absolutely thrilled with the result.â€
The inspiration behind the radio station is teacher Chris Gerrard who runs the school radio club where students present their own live radio shows at lunchtimes.
Chris said: “I initially discussed with Mrs Holmes about using the equipment in the radio studio to help Rory work on his voice levels.
“Rory has limited functional language due to his Autistic Spectrum Disorder and when asked to speak louder, Rory would shout very loudly and when he was asked to speak more quietly, Rory would whisper.
“We used the radio studio as it is a very visual way in which Rory could gauge how loud or quiet his voice is and Mrs Holmes now refers to the levels used in the radio studio in every day classroom situations such as level 4 voice is perfect, level 2 voice is too quiet.”
Rory’s work for Radio Duncanrig was also recently featured on the Education Showcase Stage at this year’s Scottish Learning Festival.
Chris said: “It’s such a fantastic story and everyone who works with Rory is amazed at how much progress he has made by being a part of Radio Duncanrig.

Jobs allow for involvement, earning competitive wages
Todd Erdes clocks in at the Schwabe North America loading and distribution center every weekday, just like the rest of his coworkers.
He works out at the company gym, goes out after work to play darts or bowl and gets dressed up for the company Halloween party. The main difference between the 31-year-old Green Bay man and the rest of his coworkers is his autism. Erdes’ superiors consider his work ethic second-to-none, and he earns more than $11 per hour.
“He brings a different sense of energy to this company. He’s an individual that wants to be here 24-7 if he could be,” said Isaac Oshefsky, distribution group leader at the manufacturing distributor formerly known as Enzymatic Therapy that produces nutritional supplements. “It opened up my eyes. “But Erdes is an outlier. Most people who spend 10 years in a sheltered workshop, which he did, never find jobs working alongside other nondisabled individuals for competitive wages in the community. Competitive employment is an optimal outcome for many disabled adults and a means to escape poverty and complete dependence, according disability experts. But the extent to which it can be achieved and the role played by sheltered workshops, the largest provider of work and rehabilitation services for the disabled, is a source of contention.
What’s at stake
In Green Bay, Diane Gustin started a gourmet popcorn company called Heart@Work Unlimited, which is focused on employing people with disabilities like her son, Drew Gustin, a 21-year-old with Down syndrome.A longtime business owner, Gustin is convinced that many working-age adults with disabilities have the abilities, work ethic and enthusiasm to contribute to community businesses alongside the rest of the work force just like Drew and others who work with her. She also believes sheltered workshops — her son still works part time at ASPIRO — offer crucial services and training to people with disabilities to help them achieve employment.

In a shocking revelation, it has been told that the Department of Human Services (DHS) has failed miserably to deal with the case of death of a young autistic boy. The four years old Rory was told to have consumed his father’s medication, an oxycodone tablet, by mistake, and that is what caused the death of the boy.
It was told that the police had done search operation on the bus where the boy was living with his family at that time, and found that parents were taking drugs. It was told by Senior Constable Peter Clayton and Constable Rebecca Creed that the bus was in pathetic condition, and they found a number of spoons with the residue of white powder and several hypodermic needles.
Once the case got registered with the DHS, they started their investigation. It was confirmed that couple of times, the department met the family involved.
To the shock of many, it was told that the DHS has made the decision to shut the case as the family has moved to some other location in December 2003, but when the family approached the department once again, the DHS simply delegated the case to other organizations.
It has shocked Coroner Jennifer Tregent the most, as she told that the DHS showed impatience in dealing with the case and the underlying issue of child abuse.
The deceased boy was told to have two siblings also, and there is similar danger to those ones also. It was told that before closing the case for the first time, the two kids were shifted with a family member in Ballarat, but later when the family moved to the Mildura area, the kids joined them.
“The department’s concern was focused primarily on appropriate housing and they simply ignored the allegations of drug use”, said the Coroner investigating the case, while putting a huge question mark on the DHS.
