AIR CADETS from Edmonton will be flying successes at an awards ceremony in Edmonton next week.

The 1159 (Edmonton) Squadron Air Training Corps holds its Squadrons Award Night at Waverley School, The Ride, on February 24 at 7:30 pm.

The 40 cadets aged between 13 and 20 will celebrate their achievements in 2009, which include Duke of Edinburgh awards, flying theory courses, and certificates for best turned out cadet and best overall cadet.

One cadet, Sgt Jamie McClory, 17, will receive a certificate for achieving his gliding wings.

Sharon Hurst, civilian instructor, said: “We are very proud of them, they have all achieved a lot. They often don’t think they can achieve things. We have one cadet with Asperger’s syndrome who said ‘I have never passed an exam in my life’, now he has passed the priniciples of flight exam.

“These awards help them achieve a sense of discipline as well, something our country has lost. Often these kids don’t have respect for their teachers but they do show respect at cadets for staff and for each other.”

The Deputy Lieutenant for Enfield, Mr Grahame Eustance OBE, and Wing Commander Ian Davison, of the Middlesex Wing ATC will be handing out the awards.
